Bermuda Travel Guide

A Bermuda vacation – just the mere mention of it brings visions of pink sand, deep blue water, and pastel buildings. Relax, explore, even get married - all are popular activities on a vacation to Bermuda. Composed of 138 islands, Bermuda is the oldest remaining territory settled by England. Afternoon tea and cricket are mixed with calypso music and Caribbean soul food. Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway, a vacation with the family, or just a place to rediscover yourself, this affluent territory in the North Atlantic Ocean is the perfect location for an unforgettable vacation.

When to Go

Bermuda enjoys mild sub-tropical weather year round. Any time is good for a Bermuda vacation, but you may experience high humidity during midsummer. Winter boasts much cooler weather, and the water may be a bit chilly for swimming, but prices can be up to 40% cheaper. December through May is the most ideal time to visit, with temperatures averaging 70 degrees-75 degrees. Showers can occur any time of the year, but they pass quickly. Hurricane season runs from June – November, but few tropical storms actually hit the island.

Airfare and Transportation

Bermuda’s only airport, L.F. Wade International Airport (BDA), is conveniently located just 3 miles southwest of St. George and is only 9 miles from the capital city of Hamilton. Cheap airfare to Bermuda can be secured for as low as $388 for a direct flight from JFK, and connecting flights from LAX or SFO are as inexpensive as $520, or $334 from ORD.

Cars cannot be rented in Bermuda, but scooters (called putt-putts), taxis, buses, and ferries are all widely available for personal transportation. While enjoying the slower Bermuda lifestyle, opt to ride in a horse and carriage for a change of pace.

Hotels and Lodging

All types of lodging can be obtained on a Bermuda vacation and costs range from the very cheap to the ridiculously expensive. Every type of accommodations, from all-inclusive resorts to guesthouses, can be enjoyed on a Bermuda vacation. Consider house-swapping, which is becoming increasingly popular, to experience the real Bermuda.  If a luxurious resort is more your style, stay at the Pompano Beach Club.

Things to Do

A Bermuda vacation offers a variety of activities, ranging from lounging on the beach to exploring St. George, the first permanent settlement on the island.

If you’re looking for more adventure, consider sightseeing on a glass bottom boat tour and snorkeling with Aquatic Bermuda. This highly acclaimed company offers visitors the opportunity to view fish and coral up-close. And with only a handful of other tourists on each boat, this is sure to be a highlight of your trip.

For a less structured day, visit Horseshoe Beach in Southampton Parish, considered by many to be the most beautiful beach in the world. Here you can swim in pristine blue waters and relax on the famous pink sand of the Bahamas. Lifeguards are posted from May – October due to the dangerous rip currents. Children will enjoy the small cove at the western end of the beach where the water is shallow.

The Royal Naval Dockyard, located in Sandys, was built in the 1800s and is Bermuda’s most popular attraction. Here you can visit the Bermuda Maritime Museum and Dolphin Quest. Shop at the Clocktower Mall, take home a souvenir from the Bermuda Craft Market, or just stroll around the grounds.

For those planning to get married on their Bermuda vacation, consider St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. The oldest church in Hamilton, St. Andrew’s is known as the “pink church” and looks like a picture postcard.
