Dominican Republic Travel Guide

The Dominican Republic is the ideal vacation destination for those wanting to visit the Caribbean on a budget. This family-friendly country shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti and is located between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic. Christopher Columbus called this island the most beautiful in the world, and much of the coastline hasn’t changed since he first viewed it. The stunning Dominican Republic is affordable, and considered one of the friendliest vacation spots in the Caribbean. Whether you are coming for the pristine beaches or the lush inland areas, a Dominican Republic vacation offers you the chance to truly get away.

Best Times to Go

For a tropical locale, look no further. The weather in the Dominican Republic is practically perfect year-round. The only difference in seasons is the amount of rainfall, with May through November being the wettest. Periodic hurricanes have been known to hit the Dominican Republic, and you will want to keep your eye on local weather reports if you book your vacation between June and November. The most popular times to visit are from December to February and July to August. The week before Easter can be very popular, too.

Airfare and Transportation

The Dominican Republic conveniently offers travelers a choice of 10 international airports. The most popular is Punta Cana International (PUJ) in the East. Cheap flights to the Dominican Republic (via Punta Cana) from JFK can be as low as $492. Discount airfare to the Dominican Republic with a connection is as cheap as $506 from ORD, $691 from SFO, or $556 from LAX. Las Americas International (SDQ), the next most popular airport, is located in the capital city of Santo Domingo in the south. Airfare is slightly cheaper into this airport with rates running as little as $442 for a nonstop from JFK. Connecting flights from ORD, SFO, and LAX run $443, $619, and $556 respectively. Another widely used airport is Gregorio Luperon International (POP) in the northern city of Puerto Plata. Cheap airfare runs $422 from JFK, $599 from LAX, $596 from SFO, and $446 from ORD.

Taxis, buses and cars are all available throughout the Dominican Republic. If you want an authentic experience while visiting, consider taking a Gua Guas. This is an unregulated form of transportation run by private drivers, so be prepared to ride in an overloaded battered van, but for an extremely cheap price.

Hotels and Lodging

Private villas, upscale resorts, seaside condos, even campgrounds are all lodging options on a Dominican Republic vacation. A popular all-inclusive resort in Puerto Plata is the adults-only Maxim Bungalows. Located in Cofresi Beach, this is a great getaway destination for romance and sun. For those visiting Santo Domingo, consider the Hotel Atarazana. This boutique hotel has a friendly staff and a beautiful colonial setting - great for families or couples.

Things to Do

Eco and Adventure Tours are very popular in the Dominican Republic. For those who love the outdoors, contact Iguana Mama. They can help you plan unforgettable waterfall tours, mountain biking excursions, even a hike up famous Pico Duarte. Yasika Adventures near Puerto Plata specializes in zip line adventures. This adrenaline pumping thrill ride offers spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and Puerto Plata.

The Dominican Republic is a favorite destination for golfers. Punta Espada at the Cap Cana Resort has been called one of the top 10 golf courses in the Caribbean. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the Caribbean Sea can be seen from every hole.

Don’t miss the shopping while in the Dominican Republic. Amber, larimar, rum - even cigars - are all popular souvenirs. Visit the Amber Museum and one of the gift shops there can help you get the best deals on both amber and larimar.
