New York Restaurants
There are about 17,000 different restaurants in New York City, so many that you could choose a different one for each meal, three meals a day, and not get through them all for nearly 6 years. Your vacation is likely to be much shorter, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the very best in dining while on your New York vacation. Choose a diner for breakfast, a new kind of cuisine for lunch, and a romantic or famous restaurant for dinner. The options are unlimited!
Diners
Other towns may have coffee shops, but New York City has its diners, as Seinfeld watchers definitely know. Whatever neighborhood you choose to stay in for your New York vacation, there are likely to be some diners around. Diners are best known for their coffee, sandwiches on toasted bread, fried egg dishes, and sassy waitresses. Don’t miss this photo op! A couple of the most famous diners include the Westway Diner, the Brooklyn Diner of Times Square and the diner at the Paramount Hotel.
Famous Landmark Restaurants
Besides diners, New York City is also known for a handful of famous restaurants. There is no deli city in the world like New York, so if you’re craving Pastrami on Rye or chopped liver you’ve come to the right place. Katz’s Delicatessen is one of the most famous delis in the world; located on the Lower East Side, it’s worth a stop on. Another New York restaurant icon, Tavern on the Green (off Central Park), is a definite must-do for those wanting a complete New York experience. You can arrive, or depart, in a horse-drawn carriage. If you visit in the summer, be sure to dine in their fairy-like garden terrace. For after theater drinks, stop by the Gotham Bar in Manhattan/Greenwich Village.
Chefs You’ve Heard About
Iron Chef competitions, the Food Network, Top Chef and even local PBS cooking shows have made chefs the new superstars of our generation. But they’re usually based in New York City, not Hollywood! Some of the most famous chefs in the world have a restaurant outpost in New York City. The revered Daniel Boulud has several fine dining establishments, including the eponymous Daniel. Anthony Bourdain, the host and author of No Reservations, is a chef-at-large for Brasserie Les Halles. And Babbo, of course, is the crown jewel in celebrity chef Mario Batali’s crown.
