Shopping in Ireland

As with any big city, Ireland is home to some of the world’s top names in fashion. The city also houses many unique Irish stores, which exemplify the culture and flavor of true Irish living. There are three notable shopping districts in Dublin, but a lot more all over the country. But because Dublin is the main city of Ireland, people often make trips here to do there shopping. Beyond that, most of the best shopping areas are also the favorite tourists spots, so shopping may be a little crowded, but always fun!

Grafton Street: This is probably the best-known street in Dublin. Grafton Street is literally bursting at the seems most days with shoppers rushing to places like Brown Thomas, Guess, and a lot of other big name fashion chains. The street is also a main thoroughfare for tourists regardless of shopping as it joins Trinity College with St. Stephen’s Green. But many people not intending on visiting any of the shops end up stopping anyway as there are many interesting places to see. It is also a really fun place to simply experience Irish life with vendors selling beautiful flowers and fresh produce on the streets. If you need a break, it is always good to visit the world famous Bewley’s Café. Stop in for some coffee or a snack, but it is definitely worth a look.

City Center, Dublin: The Spire of Dublin marks the city’s main thoroughfare, O’Connell St. This street houses large department stores and massive bookstores. Nearby is the pedestrianized Henry St., which is home to some of the world’s best brand name fashion. Throughout this part of Dublin you will find such stores like H&M, Zara, and Clery’s. While this area of shopping may be less popular than Grafton Street or Temple Bar it is best known for its value stores. So, if you are looking for some good deals it’s not a bad place to look. Plus, it is easy to find. No matter where you are in Dublin you can see the Spire. Just walk toward it and you will be there. After a day of shopping you can also go to one of the many cinemas in the city center and kick back and watch a movie. Or visit a pub or café for some refreshments.

Temple Bar
has some of the best shopping in Ireland. It is dubbed Ireland’s capital of alternative shopping. It is littered with eclectic shops selling jewelry, awesome music, and is even home to trendy stores like Urban Outfitters. Just take an afternoon to walk along the cobblestone streets and go into to all the great stores. Even if you have no money to spend, window-shopping is fun in Temple Bar. There are also great organic food markets and alternative “green” clothing shops. Plus, if you are getting tired you can stop in at one of the many cafés or pubs to rest a while. The famous Temple Bar (for which the area is named) is especially interesting to see. Shopping isn’t all there is to do or see in this funky little neighborhood. Often you will find crazy street performers eating fire, awesome singer-songwriters trying to get known on a corner, and even a leprechaun or two who want a picture with you. So, Temple Bar is more than just great shopping, it’s a true Irish experience!
