Los Angeles Sights and Landmarks
From breathtaking views to crowded city streets, Los Angeles provides endless entertainment for visitors on any budget.
Free Attractions: Quite possibly the most famous movie theater ever, Grauman’s Chinese Theater is a Hollywood staple. The huge, flamboyant structure is always teeming with crowds, but those in love with Hollywood history must stop by to see the footprints of the most famous stars in front of the building. The theater is now more for tourists than locals, but is still home to film premiers and awards shows from time to time. Along with the fun of the theater comes the unique atmosphere of Hollywood Blvd., with its costumed performers and those hoping to make it big by impressing passers-by.
For a different kind of free performance, check out the Ocean Front Walk by Venice Beach. Although the atmosphere can be a bit dingy and overwhelming at first, a walk by the beach will reveal talented artists, dancers, singers and other performers as they gather in the bustling area. The walk also houses basketball, handball and paddle tennis courts for some very devoted regulars.
Value Attractions: When you’re in the mood to soak up some beauty and culture at the same time, make the drive up to the Getty Center, off of the 405 freeway in Los Angeles. Free except for a parking fee, a tram takes you to the gorgeous grounds, filled with beautiful gardens and grassy spots to stretch out with a book or a date. On a clear day, the marble balconies provide panoramic views. The interior of the museum is just as entertaining, with an extensive permanent European and American art collection and impressive temporary exhibitions. During the spring and summer months, the Getty Center offers Fridays off the 405, with a live DJ, dance floor and bar set up on the outdoor areas for a high-class happy hour. The museum stays open later as well so that you can see the art in a new light after a glass of wine.
It’s not very often that a place of science attracts so many curious visitors, but the Griffith Observatory makes even the least brainy visitor a fan of astronomy, at least for one night. The observatory is a true Los Angeles icon, located in the hills of the Los Feliz section of Los Angeles and providing beautiful views on a clear night. Shows at the planetarium are under $10 for kids and adults, with several showings daily throughout the week.
Luxury Attractions: For a wide selection of nighttime entertainment, head to the brand-new L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles. Described as an “entertainment campus,” the promenade houses many restaurants and bars at all different price points, from classy Japanese restaurant Katsuya to the Yard House bar. Visitors can also browse the Grammy museum, bowl at Lucky Strike Lanes or watch a live performance at the Club Nokia.
For those with a bit of wanderlust, Catalina Island is a beautiful and convenient getaway from Los Angeles. Visitors can arrive by boat, plane or car from Long Beach, Marina Del Rey or Newport Beach, although most prefer the boat method. Once on the island, you can take an action/adventure tour of the land, golf or go scuba diving or snorkeling. There are also several boat rental companies on the island, and services that provide whale watching. For the truly adventurous, there are parasailing lessons on Catalina as well. For those staying overnight at a hotel or rental unit on the island, there is a local company that will bring massage and facial services directly to your room for maximum relaxation.
