Miami Sights and Landmarks

There are certain images that set each Miami apart from all others – pictures we come to associate with Miami in our mind and memories. Visiting, and capturing on film, some of the highlights of your Miami vacation will make it easy and fun to recall the good times after you return home. Although there are hundreds of places you could visit and things you could do while on your Miami vacation, here are some of the best.

Little Havana

In Miami-Dade County, 67% of the population speaks Spanish at home, and a large portion of those Spanish-speakers are of Cuban extraction. From the warm café con leche with morning breakfast to the icy mint mojito that accompanies an evening out, Miami is filled with the tastes, sights, and smells of Cuba.  Little Havana, where the billboards are in Spanish, is definitely welcoming to its inglés speaking visitors, too.  Less than ten minutes away from Biscayne you’re likely to find wizened men playing board games or dominos at the aptly named (Maximo Gomez) Dominos Park. A walk to and through the cigar shops on 7th and 8th Avenue is likely to induce a purchase in those who enjoy a quiet evening smoke. After making your purchase, be sure to stop in one of the little restaurants and cafés that line the boulevards. Try some Arroz con Pollo or a plate of spicy black beans.

Crandon Park Beach

When one thinks of a Miami vacation, one thinks bright, beaches. The most famous beach in Miami is Crandon Park Beach. An amazing, two-mile long stretch of pristine white sand kissed by the gentle blue waves lapping against it is enough to entice the most reluctant bather into his swim suit. The beach is sunny lagoon-style, meaning that the waters are gentle with long stretches of waist deep water for water play without worry. You can rent a private beach cabana, learn to kite board, people-watch, or simply develop a killer tan.

Everglades National Park

A unique eco system of over 300 species of birds, 500 species of fish, snakes, crocs and ‘gators all spread across a million and a half acres of swamp land, Everglades National Park is quintessential South Florida. Its truly helpful and easy-to-use visitor center, the Royal Palm, will get you oriented, as well as allow for bathroom breaks. Start out walking the man-made boardwalk, Anhinga Trail. You’ll see so much wildlife -gators, turtles, herons - you’ll forget you’re truly out in the open. For a highlight of your Miami vacation, take a boat or aerial tour from one of the local operators. Don’t forget to stop by the River of Grass.

Art Deco District

Bright blue, pink, mint, and yellow pastel-colored buildings, the meltaway mints of the landscape world, are some of the most famous visuals of Miami. Some buildings are freshly painted, some peeling with care and age, but all are certainly enjoyed while on your Miami vacation. The Art Deco District is easy to find, located on Ocean Drive near Lummus Park. Sign up for a guided tour, maybe the Underworld Tour highlighted Miami’s gangster past. Or do a self guided tour, using your ipod, cell phone, or a free brochure showcasing the areas highlights.

Biltmore Hotel

Al Capone was a regular, as was Ginger Rogers (and presumably Fred Astaire), but today anyone can enjoy a stay, or walk through, the renowned Biltmore. Long a landmark of moneyed Miami, this salmon colored beauty rises up from the surrounding greens to dominate ritzy Coral Gables. Their Fourth of July celebration is worth planning a trip around. Not staying at the resort? Try their famous brunch – with all you can eat such - instead.
