Vacation

Vacation.  Holiday.  Trip.  All of these words are synonymous with the experience of venturing out in hopes of leaving a bit of our daily lives behind us.  At its core, there really aren’t any limitations on where you can go or what you do.  In fact, many a successful vacation has been had by going nowhere and doing absolutely nothing.  The spirit is the only thing essential to its enjoyment.  However, the majority of vacationers will ultimately choose to do something a little more engaging than simply sit around their house for a week or two.

Your vacation is going to be exactly what you make of it.  That being said, there are still some things that should be taken into account ahead of time, such as:

Circumstance
– Are you travelling alone or with family?  Does that family have kids, and if so, how old?  What about special needs or disabilities that will have to be considered?

Cost – While money shouldn’t have any effect on the amount of fun you have, it obviously has influence in terms of accommodations, experiences, and mode of travel.

Time – It would be awfully wasteful to spend 3-4 days out of a week-long vacation travelling to and from your destination.  Unless of course you’re talking road trip!

While “types of vacations” is fairly subjective term, a look at the bigger picture does show some pretty distinct trends in the way we travel, and how it can be grouped together.  While the number of these could also be broken down into specific destinations and activities, let’s take a quick look at some of the most popular trends overall, with examples:

Adventure Travel – If it gets your heart racing, then it’s likely adventure travel.  From scaling Mt. Everest, the highest peak in the world, to spelunking the Waitomo cave system in New Zealand, along with everything in between, the only limit to the possibilities here is going to be your nerves and imagination.

Family Vacation – These vacations are what childhood memories are made of.  Trips to such family hotpots like Disneyland and Colonial Williamsburg are some of the American favorites.

Romantic Travel – You and your significant other jet away to a resort or secluded corner of tropical paradise, looking for a bit of escape from everything else in your lives but each other.  It doesn’t necessarily have to be on a beach somewhere; bed and breakfasts like the Murchison House in North Carolina are also a perfect spot for a lover’s weekend getaway.

Cruise Travel –A vacation that is relatively self-contained—without forfeiting the opportunity to visit someplace new and exciting—is of an obvious appeal.  As the cruise industry boasts a steady increase in popularity, lines like the wildly popular Carnival have expanded to meet demands and provide an entirely new level of experience for the cruising traveler.
